Harris Wayne "Hawkeye" Hawkins Obituary

Harris Wayne “Hawkeye” Hawkins went home to be with his Lord and to be reunited with his beloved wife, Elsie and son, Mark, on June 27, 2018 at the age of 97.

Wayne was born in Lisbon, Ohio on March 18, 1921, but lived most of his life in Steubenville, Ohio.  He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Edna Hawkins, wife, Elsie, son, Mark, sister, Frances (Raymond) Miller, brother, Paul, and daughter-in-law, Claire.

Wayne graduated from Wintersville High School in 1939 and was a member of their first football team. After high school, he worked for Armour and Company as a truck driver. During World War II he served in the United States Army where he was trained as a medic and was promoted to the rank of sergeant. He spent most of the war on Attu Island, the westernmost island in the Aleutian Island chain off Alaska. On returning from the war, Wayne resumed his work at Armour and Company and was promoted to salesman. After Armour closed their Steubenville branch, he found employment with Weirton Steel Corporation, a division of National Steel Corporation. Starting as a laborer he was promoted to pipefitter in their construction division and retired as a foreman. He was a longtime member of the First Christian Church of Steubenville where he served as a deacon and elder.  Wayne was mechanically skilled and enjoyed building motorbikes, go carts, walls, patios, porches, and garages. There were few things that he could not repair. He enjoyed wood carving, golfing, and horses. He spent much time with his family and made them the center of his attention.  He is survived by his son, Curtis (Vicki) Wayne Hawkins, MD, grandson, Bryan Andrew (Lindsay) Hawkins, attorney, sisters-in-law, Mildred Hawkins and Peggy Dreyer, brothers-in-law, Elmer and Kenneth Dreyer, Tre DeVore, and numerous nieces and nephews.   A private service was held on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at the Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, Wintersville, with his nephew Pastor Sam Davis officiating.  Interment followed at Fort Steuben.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the First Christian Church, P.O. Box 987, Steubenville, OH 43952.

The family wishes to thank Fred Thompson who cared for Wayne in his later years with the devotion that would be shown to a brother, Rose Blackburn and the other staff of Heritage Home Care in Toronto, Ohio, the staff of Brookdale Bath in Akron, Ohio, and the staff of Harbor Light Hospice.
